Occupation Loans
These were funds—in cash, goods, and other assets—that subjugated Greece was compelled to remit to the German Reich during the period of the German Occupation (1941–1944). These funds were covered by intergovernmental agreements between the governments of Germany and Greece and were designated as “Temporary Loans,” on the condition that they be repaid by 1944.
The amount of these funds, initially valued at USD $1,747,136,579 (1944), was later recalculated by the Hellenic State – General Accounting Office to USD $109,658,208,209 (2014).
Subsequently, based on calculations carried out by our Committee (International Committee on German Debt to Greece) and considering the USD/EUR exchange rates and the cost of capital based on the yields of 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds, the amount is now estimated at USD $153,062,643,702 (as of October 31, 2025).
